The Medical Laboratory (MLT) program is designed to prepare students for employment in medical, clinical, research, and public health laboratories. A Medical Laboratory collects or receives patient specimens, performs many general laboratory tests, and records and reports results which aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
The program includes both theory and practical experiences. The program is a comprehensive educational experience with training and education in all phases of laboratory medicine, including Haematology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Transfusion Medicine, Cytology, Histo Tecnology and Chemical Pathology.
MLTs use their knowledge to perform tests that help physicians diagnose, monitor, and treat disease. They can determine the cause of an infection, they can use sophisticated equipment to analyze the blood’s chemical constituents (such as glucose or cholesterol), they know how to use a microscope to identify normal and abnormal white blood cells, and they can determine a patient’s blood type and prepare blood for transfusion. MLTs supply an abundance of invaluable diagnostic and therapeutic information to the health care team.
This programme trains and teaches students to specialize in the diagnosis of diseases through the analysis of biological tests. The course is conducted in different laboratories during practical sessions. The study will be complemented and enhanced with a one semester clinical experience during their final year. The curriculum includes several areas which are related to the diagnostic field using a variety of biological specimens such as blood, urine, faeces, sputum and human tissues. These tests are conducted in different laboratory settings namely Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Cytology, Histo Technology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine.
